How big should you design your closets?

Most of us live in rental spaces or houses that we lovingly purchase and choose. Regardless of whether you love your apartment or house, the same often cannot be said for the size or layout of the storage areas that come with these homes. Given the opportunity to design a home with perfect closets, what are the important things to consider before actually deciding how big your closets should be?

Here are some tips and ideas that can help you as you think about the actual purpose of your storage. Proper closet design and space layout will result in a well-functioning home where you have a good balance of living and storage space.

Before today’s trend towards closet renovations, creating extra storage space where there was none before and oversized walk-in closets with private bathrooms, our storage options were often limited to the essential ‘small boxy closet with a clothes rail and a hat rack’. Now, with renovation projects creating new and imaginative storage spaces, and new construction allocating space for large walk-in closets, you need to think more about what makes a good closet design, as it’s harder to make than a larger storage space is effective without proper planning.

So the first big question when designing each of your storage areas is whether or not it should be a walkable space. The most important factor for most people will be the space (and therefore the cost) that a walk-in closet requires. If that doesn’t concern you, then the second question should be “do I really need a dressing room?”. Remember, if you have too much storage space, it will usually get used, and the danger of clutter is just as concerning as if you have too little space to store your items.

Although you have the option of designing a larger storage space, you may decide that this is not the most effective decision in certain cases. If so, remember that small closets require just as much effort in the design process to create efficiently-functioning storage spaces. Especially since space is limited, an oversight in the design process, such as opening too small, can end up wasting valuable storage space.

Whether your closet is large or small, it will be essential to install good lighting, which will illuminate every corner of the closet. There’s nothing worse than not having enough lighting so you can’t see what’s on the back of the shelves or under the shelves. Make sure the lighting you install is positioned so that shelves and stored items don’t block light, and also take into account the shadow you’ll cast when reaching through your closet.

The last thing to consider is the style of shelving, compartments, shelves, and hangers you need to store all your belongings. There are wonderful storage shelf designs these days that offer a number of drop-down, pull-out, or flip-down options that allow you to store your belongings neatly, yet allow you to tuck them away from other items when you remove them. I do not need them. Be sure to install enough shelves, etc. so everything has a place, but don’t add too many that you end up having to move items around to access other items.

Remember that designing your closet to maximize the amount of things you can store is important, but if you cram too many things into your closets, then the effectiveness is minimized if you can’t quickly find what you’re looking for, or it’s not a good place to store. the items you are trying to save. Make sure the organizing system you choose has enough compartments, drawers, or shelves to easily store whatever you’re storing.
