In the US today, cell phones use either analog service or digital service. Most new cell phones use digital technology. Three digital wireless technologies are currently used in the US: TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access), CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). Unfortunately, many times digital cell phones can only work with one technology: TDMA, CDMA, or GSM.

You must first find the cell phone plan you want to subscribe to. After you have decided on your service plan and cell phone carrier and are satisfied with the cell phone services that carrier offers, you can select the phone you want. By first selecting a carrier and service plan, you cover yourself from the mistake of selecting a cell phone that uses a different technology than what your wireless carrier offers. At this point, you can choose the phone that has all the functions and features that you want.
