Siamese – a lovely, demanding and protective pet

When you say Siamese cat, most people think of short-haired seal points, which have a slim, creamy-white body, dark brown ears, nose, and tail. But, there are several variations of the breed, as well as crosses like those of the Himalayas, which are a cross of Siamese and Persians. The blue point has a bluish-white body with slate blue points. The chocolate point has more mocha points and the flame point has apricot ears, nose and tail. The body of a purebred Siamese is graceful and features a triangular head, large ears, and pointed features. The Siamese are one of the oldest and best known races. They got their name when they were exported from Thailand in the late 1800s. At that time, Thailand was Siam.

My relationship with Siamese twins started when I was one year old. My mother kept me outside in a playpen. I was at the house when a distant uncle passed by. Upon seeing me for the first time, he ran to my pen with outstretched arms, only to be viciously attacked by Josie, our Seal Point Siamese, who had been protecting me from under the playpen. Today I share my house with several cats. Lucky, it’s a flame point Siamese mix that I rescued from a high traffic area. It practically ignores the other cats and follows me everywhere. If I try to prevent him from entering a room where I am working, he stands up on his hind legs and bangs on the door and howls. It will continue like this for more than 30 minutes. Every night since I found him, he sleeps next to my head or stands guard like a sentry. If someone raises their voice at me, Lucky will circle in front of me, raise his back, and begin to “howl” (meows in anger) at the person. I’ve been bitten by a cat twice. Both times, I was detaching Lucky from a dog that had gotten too close to me. Fearless, Lucky launched an attack. Since he cannot see well, he did not know that he had caught it. Although Lucky is a mixed breed cat, his personality is similar to that of a purebred cat.

Siamese twins have personalities that are unique and quiet. They want to be your best friend and they will walk through fire to be close to their guardian. They do not tolerate being alone well. They like to be around their guardian all the time, they are smart and like to play fetch, they can open doors and cabinets that hint at other cats, they love to lie on your lap and hang out near the bathtub when they bathe. Siamese twins are extremely loyal, loving, and intelligent. They can be trained to travel well, they can be brave, and they have a long lifespan of 18 to 20 years. They generally don’t like dogs.

If you are thinking of getting a Siamese, you may want to read up on them and see if you can volunteer at a breed rescue site. Plan to keep your Siamese as an indoor pet, as most have crossed eyes and do not see well. If you adopt or buy a Siamese, expect a cat that demands attention, is very vocal and intelligent. If you want a cat, because you think a cat requires little maintenance, you may not want a Siamese. Some people take their conjoined twins to a pet shelter because they cannot tolerate their demanding nature or vocal qualities. However, if you are the type of person who would love a true companion, but cannot have or do not want a dog, a Siamese may be an ideal match. In addition to their crazy antics and affectionate nature, you might be delightfully surprised by their unwavering loyalty and protective qualities.
