Whitehawk Spirit Training Solstice Bulletin

Dear friends,

After a long and much-needed hiatus from writing, I am back refreshed and ready to begin my newsletter. I am playing with different formats, so bear with me. The big change is that I am only going to publish the letter seasonally (that is, four times a year).

The mountains are green, the weather is beautiful, my rose bushes are blooming like there’s no tomorrow, and Sprite, my West Highland White Terrier, is enjoying his backyard once again with abandon here in southern Oregon.

Just over a year ago, I lost my dear friend Taylor to complications from AIDS. Specifically, he told his partner to tell everyone not to send flowers, that he would send them to us shortly. Last year I received my roses from Taylor. This year my roses came from another dear friend, Ron, who has been gone for just over six months and whom I miss more than I can express. In fact, I am choking while writing these words. I didn’t know it was possible to feel so alone, and yet mystically I feel his presence with me all the time. In my darkest moments, I can feel his arms around me like I do now. So my friends, appreciate your loved ones and take every opportunity to express that love and appreciation to those who matter most to you. Our place in time is not forever, so live and love without regrets.

REFLECTION:

For this month’s reflection, I have once again resorted to the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Lutheran pastor and martyr of the Resistance to the Nazi War. This passage comes from A Testament for Freedom and I urge you to take it deeply seriously. It is a message that we must hear and remember on a daily basis. Imagine how different the world would be if each person measured their value for love in their lives. The passage is as follows:

“A life has meaning and value only to the extent that love is in it. Furthermore, life is nothing, nothing at all, and it has no meaning or value if love is not in it. The value of a life is measured by how much love you have. Everything else is nothing, nothing at all, totally indifferent, totally unimportant. All the bad things and all the good things in life, all the big and small things in life are not They are important. We are only asked about one thing: -Whether we have love or not … Life is not really worth living without love. However, the whole meaning of life is fulfilled where there is love. Compared to this love , everything else pales into insignificance. What does happiness and unhappiness mean, what does wealth and poverty mean, what does honor and misfortune mean, what does it mean to live at home or abroad, what does life mean and death where people live in love? They do not know. They do not differentiate. e the sole purpose of happiness, as well as unhappiness, pove Both wealth and wealth, honor and disgrace, to live at home or abroad, to live and die is to love more strongly, purity and fullness. It is the only thing beyond all distinctions, before all distinctions, in all distinctions. ‘Love is as strong as death’ (Song of Solomon 8: 6) “.
