The green iguana has become an extremely popular pet in the United States in the last decade. It may be the most popular reptile pet in the United States today. You see people with pet green iguanas on a leash and carrying them on their shoulders like a parrot. There is no doubt that people love to have a pet as unique and interesting as a green iguana!

But before you go out and get a pet iguana, you should do your research to make sure you really want it and can properly house and care for your pet lizard. There is a lot to consider and understand before getting a green iguana as a pet. You need to understand the proper diet and feeding of an iguana, its environment, habitat, and need for housing. The housing temperature and humidity is of great importance. Learning how to handle and hold your lizard, and all the different health aspects of keeping a green iguana as a pet. Here’s something many people don’t consider before getting a green iguana, they can reach over six feet in length. Therefore, you should consider whether you have the space to house your new pet. I know you may have seen movies where someone’s pet iguana just wanders around the house or apartment, this is unrealistic.

Do you really want your pet lizard to go potty where it sits in your house? Also lizards are escape artists, they love to roam and may end up in your neighbors’ flower patch (they like to eat flowers) or in their garden, or even worse, escape when it’s cold outside and die. Healthy young iguanas can be feisty, running and diving quickly and often flicking their tails when someone tries to pick them up. Proper temperatures and humidity are extremely important to the health and well-being of your Green Iguana pet. Iguanas require a basking temperature of about 95 degrees and a housing temperature of 80 to 85 degrees. This is just a summary and you will need to know and it only covers the basics that you will need to know when owning a green iguana pet, but if you are willing to learn and do whatever it takes to keep your pet lizards healthy, they can be a pet! great to have!
