If any of you are like me and have thought about starting your own car dealership, then you have come across various websites on the internet of people who claim to have their own car lots. They also say that for a fee you can buy an ebook they have written with all the things you need to know if you want to start your own dealership. I have found most of these books to be useless. They give you outdated phone numbers and information and not just that most of the auctions they claim to know about aren’t really a secret. You are basically paying for nothing.

The fact is, you can do some research on your own and gather most of the information that these books charge you hundreds of dollars for. Each state has a department of transportation that will tell you all the requirements you need for whatever type of dealer license you want. You can also call your local CPA or call the IRS and they will help you with whatever you need to do to preserve documentation. The rest is not difficult.

I guess what I’m trying to say is save the money you’d spend on these books and put it into your car business. With the money you would spend, you could buy a car at public auction. I know because I’ve done it. Most police auctions are open to the public and that is where I suggest you start. Call the impound because that’s where they usually have the auctions.

From there, you network and find out about other auctions going on. There is also a GSA public auction in each state and they usually have an auction every month. They auction government vehicles with very little mileage. There are plenty of other opportunities like that in the car dealership business.

Try to be smart about it if you are serious and don’t be fooled. Because believe me, the car business can be very dirty. You will find that many people are not really trying to help you, especially other dealers. But if you are determined enough, you can do it and be very successful. By owning your own car dealership you can easily clean over 150k a year with hardly any overhead. It’s hard work, but you can do it.
