Types of construction projects
Construction is defined as “a process consisting of the construction or assembly of infrastructure.” (See 1. below) On the other hand, a Construction Project “includes all material and labor necessary for the construction of a finished structure for occupancy by the End Client. This includes site preparation, foundations, mechanical, electrical, and any other other work needed to complete the project.” (See 2.below)
There are different types of construction projects:
- Residential
Residential construction projects include houses, townhomes, apartments, condominiums, cabins, single-family homes, and subdivisions. Home designs are typically done by architects and engineers and construction is done by builders who hire subcontractors for structural, electrical, mechanical, and other specialized work. This type of project must comply with local building authority regulations and codes of practice. Many new builders are attracted to residential projects due to their ease of entry into the real estate market. This makes it a highly competitive market with potentially high risks and high rewards.
- building
Building construction is perhaps the most popular type of construction project. It is the process of adding structure to real estate. Most of the projects are room additions and small renovations. Most new building construction projects involve the construction of sheltered enclosures with pedestrian access to house people, equipment, machinery or supplies. Includes installation of utilities and equipment.
- Institutional and Commercial
Institutional and commercial building construction covers a wide variety of project types and sizes, such as hospitals and clinics, schools and universities, sports venues and stadiums, large shopping malls and retail chains, light manufacturing plants and warehouses, and high-rises for offices and hotels. Specialized architects and engineers are often hired to design a particular type of building. This market segment has few competitors due to the higher costs and higher sophistication of institutional and commercial buildings compared to residential construction projects.
- Industrial
Industrial construction is only a small part of the entire construction industry, however it is a very important part of the industry. These projects are usually owned by large for-profit industrial corporations such as manufacturing, power generation, medicine, oil, etc.
- Specialized Industrial Construction
This type of construction project generally involves very large-scale projects with a high degree of technological complexity, such as nuclear power plants, chemical processing plants, steel mills, and oil refineries.
- Road construction
Highway construction involves the construction, alteration or repair of roads, highways, streets, alleys, tracks, paths, parking areas, etc. Includes all incidental construction in conjunction with the highway construction project.
- heavy construction
Heavy construction projects typically involve projects that are not properly classified as “building” or “road.” Examples of this type of project would be: water and sewer line projects, dams, wastewater treatment plants and facilities, flood control projects, dredging projects, and water treatment plants and facilities.
These are the most popular types of construction projects. Construction is a huge industry and now there are several construction companies that you can choose from. This, added to the use of the Internet, has made it easier for the consumer to make a decision about how to proceed with their projects. You just need to do a little research. Feel free to contact these construction companies and ask questions. Construction projects are a major undertaking and you need to make the right decisions when starting these projects.
