Bastion Review, the children’s story

If you like indie games, I guess you do it because you have no reason not to. Bastion It is one of the greatest samples of that. Please ignore this huge time lag between the game’s release and my review, I always do that; I find an old game and play it, then decide to write an article about it, I don’t care about the release date.

the history

Bastion is a story of survivors of a calamity. Bastion is a place as a meeting point after the calamity. As an experienced soldier, The Kid, I want to say that we players try to find and save all the other survivors among the monsters in different parts of the map. We try to build our new world and save other survivors.

Bastion

Bastion is a 2D isometric action role playing game. The game never stops teaching us the basics, including carrying only 2 weapons at a time, rolling, weapon stats, and more. I have to admit that the monster fights are a bit disappointing for an action RPG. I’m used to using many skills together in Action RPGs, I love combining skills, but unfortunately in Bastion we can pick and use only 1 spell at a time and we have to have the required item to be able to use that skill. Left click to use our primary weapon, right click for our secondary weapon and only 1 spell to use… A bit boring compared to many other action RPGs on the market. Even the boss fights are not very exciting, we just need to press the right and left button at the right time while taking cover, that’s all.

I almost forgot to mention the passive skill system, distillery. We choose one of the passive skills available at each level. I must say that, unlike weapons, passive skills are not balanced. There is no clear advantage between the weapons; weapons are roughly the same with all their advantages and disadvantages. But when it comes to passive skills, there are some that no one would choose.

I can’t count too many things they do Bastion very different from the games of the same genre, but the idea of the narrator is great. He speaks according to history and our movements. When we break too many objects, for example, he says, “The Kid gets mad for a while.” The narrator also helps us with the story, he tells us the story of our character, “El Niño”. This is not all, he helps us in almost everything, from weapons to abilities, from maps to monsters…etc.

In the game, there is something else that will surely catch your attention; music. I’m not really into music and sound and was too lazy to look it up, but I’m sure you’ll love Bastion’s music. You may find yourself turning down the sound effects in order to hear the music well.

The good thing is that there is a function to keep us busy even after completing the story. We can try survival mode. Of course, not having a survival mode would be a shame for such a game. After completing the story mode, players need to continue playing the game without repeating the story mode over and over again. Survival mode comes to our aid at this point.
