Birthday speeches – 5 tips to make a good speech

It can be very daunting when it comes to writing birthday speeches for someone else. If you’re like me, you might just go blank when it comes to this topic. Thinking about the usual spiel of thanking everyone, saying happy birthday, and hoping they enjoy their night can be boring for the audience and leave them yawning.

Here are 5 tips for making a good birthday speech.

Use a speech example – Using an example speech gives you a better understanding of how to structure your content where you can swap and change the speech to customize it so it can become your own. You can try making something yourself, although if it’s something you’re having trouble with, why not find a proven recipe that might work for you?

Make sure the speech is engaging. – Your goal is to make sure that your birthday speech is engaging so that it intrigues the audience into wanting to listen to it. You would want to highlight the qualities of the person and incorporate a story or two that highlights those qualities that resonate with the audience of what that person really is.

add humor – Add some humor to the speech to captivate the audience and generate some laughs to create a good vibe at the event. Not sure which events to mention? Talk to close family members and friends of the birthday person who can share some fun moments that have happened in the past. In the rare chance that you can’t find any suitable one, you can search for some phrases that might be relevant to the birthday person and relate them to your speech.

show some sincerity – You want to make sure you are sincere and make the birthday person feel special by saying a few kind words.

keep it to the point – The speech does not have to be long. Remember, people at a party often have a short attention span, especially if they’ve been drinking. Keep it short and sweet, between 2 and 5 minutes is more than enough.

An example birthday speech might look like this:

May I have your attention? We are all here today to do something special. Something so worth celebrating. Something fun, enjoyable and memorable. We have come here together to recognize and share the joy that this moment brings. I’m talking about the open bar! Ha ha!

On a more serious note, I would like to bring to your attention one of my best friends whose 21st birthday we are celebrating here tonight. I have known (Insert Name) for over 10 years and during that time we have had many moments of fun, adventure and, as many of you may know, mischief. Whenever we were together, we always seemed to find a way to get into trouble.

Just like the time we decided to prank his mother by coloring his little brother’s face an interesting shade of green. We took the time to make it look realistic and made sure it was in permanent marker so it wouldn’t rub off easily. I remember the look on her mother’s face when she freaked out and took her brother to the hospital. After the doctor gave her a review and explained to her mom the cause of the problem. I remember her looking at us in a trance-like state. Let’s just say that she had never seen someone’s face so red before. We both found it funny at the time, although I don’t think it saw the light of day for at least a month after that incident. ha ha

Anyone who knows him knows that he will go out of his way to make sure everyone laughs. Even at his expense, he wants to make sure everyone has a good time.

He has taken on many challenges and has been successful many times, not by chance. But with perseverance and heart. Anyone who knows (Insert name), knows that he is full of heart.

So at this milestone, you can continue to strive for everything you want and I just wanted to let you know that I am grateful to have such a great friend like you. Happy Birthday.
