TV Talk Show Buddies

The era of the television companion seems to have come to an end. Before, many famous talk show hosts, like Ed McMahon, always had a faithful companion by their side. They played second banana, engaged in pranks and pranks, and were often the recipients of such pranks. It’s not easy being the wingman or second in command. It is a position that requires humility and finesse. You have been humble and somewhat servile; you have to be a friend even if you are the butt of jokes. Today, the trusted companion is a rare specimen. Some have attributed it all to the digital age. Today we have HDTVs, thousands of shows on satellite TV and the whole second man act doesn’t really grab our attention that easily.

Additionally, many shows allow the audience to participate by blogging, texting, or even calling. Often audience members are chosen to share the stage, even briefly, with the presenter; they assume the role that was once relegated to the partner. However, a renaissance may be in the works. Conan O’Brian, that big drink of water, is bringing back his adorable pal Andy Richter, who used to sit on the couch with the host in New York. He will soon be back at it in Los Angeles. In the meantime, you can remember these classic talk show buddies. See the highlights on satellite TV.

Ed McMahon virtually invented the role of talk show partner. Before he started counting down the New Years in HD and before he sold unbelievably large checks for Publisher’s Clearing House, McMahon played the supporting role of the legendary Johnny Carson during an incredible thirty-year career. He developed the role of the second person sitting on the couch, cracking jokes and tricking Carson. Really, without Ed, Carson’s show would have been quite different. McMahon’s signature exclamation Heeeeeeeerrrrrre’s Johnny has become a pop culture catchphrase.

Peggy Cass was an actress, comedian, and game show panelist. However, she is best known for playing second fiddle to Jack Paar on the Tonight Show. Cass held the announcer position on the show during the 1970s. She pulled off slapstick like the best of them. Cass later became a regular on the pageant circuit. You can still see some of her performances on satellite TV.

Regis Philbin, before going on to host his own show, started out as a sidekick on the Joey Bishop Show. Bishop liked to tease young Philbin; Once, Bishop’s taunting went too far and Philbin walked off the set during a live broadcast. However, as we all know, Regis has risen to the top and is one of the longest lasting talk show hosts around.

Newer sidekicks usually also act as gang leaders. For example, Paul Shaffer, the musical director of the Tonight Show, often lends a hand to David Letterman on some of his jokes; he is also there for moral support and banter. Max Weinberg, Conan’s drummer, takes on the same role, especially since Richter’s departure.

Despite his waning popularity, there will always be a role for the dependable and constant clown and friend.
